Everything looks the same because it largely is. Manufactured to the same specifications, available in the same colours, designed to be replaced within a season. Accessories that could belong to anyone, which means they feel like they belong to no one. Crochet accessories in India are the opposite of this. They are made stitch by stitch, by a real person, from real yarn, in a process that cannot be mechanised without losing the thing that makes the object worth having.

Most birthday gifts default to convenience — a quick order from whatever app loads fastest, a gift voucher when the deadline is too close to think clearly, a box of something sweet because at least nobody actively dislikes chocolate. These solve the immediate problem. They rarely solve the actual one, which is that a birthday deserves a gift that feels like it was chosen for this person, in this year of their life, not assembled from a generic “birthday gifts” results page.
