Our Story

The women behind made of hands.

A small store born in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand, made entirely by women who work from home. No factories, no machines — just real hands, real skill, and a lot of care in every stitch.

THE BEGINNING

How it all started

It started with a pair of orange socks.

My mother gave them to me one winter to keep my feet warm. She told me her mother — my grandmother — had knitted them by hand. I remember the first time I wore them: they fit perfectly, they were soft in a way that shop-bought socks never are, and they felt warm in a way that had nothing to do with the wool.

I was wearing something made by someone who loved me. And you could feel it.

That feeling stayed with me for a long time. I kept thinking — why don't more people get to experience this? The comfort of something genuinely handmade, made with care, made by real hands?

That one question is where Made of Hands began.

I didn't know much about knitting myself, so I did what anyone would do — I called my friend's grandmother. She sat with us, taught us about yarn, about needles, about how to read a stitch. She was patient in the way only grandmothers can be. And through her, we got connected to other women in the area — women from the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand who knew how to knit and crochet beautifully, but who didn't have a way to turn that skill into steady income.

What struck me most was this: these women didn't want to leave their homes. They had families to care for, routines that mattered to them, lives rooted in their communities. They just needed work that could come to them — not the other way around.

So that became the heart of what we do. Made of Hands is a small handmade store run by an all-women team of artisans based in Almora, Uttarakhand, tucked into the quiet hills of the Himalayas. Every handmade beanie, every woollen muffler, every crochet plushie and keychain you see on this website is made entirely by hand by these women — in their homes, at their own pace, with real skill and real care.

No factories. No machines. No shortcuts.

Just hands, wool, and the same warmth my grandmother put into a pair of orange socks, passed forward to you.

why choose us

Why people choose made of hands

There are a lot of places to buy a beanie or a keychain online. Here's why people keep coming back to ours.

Every product is truly handmade — no exceptions.

We don't use machines. Every knitted cap, crocheted plushie, woollen sock, and crochet keychain is made entirely by hand by our women artisans in Uttarakhand. That means each piece takes real time — and carries real character. You'll notice slight differences in texture, stitch, or shade between two similar products. That's not a flaw. That's what handmade looks like.

You're buying from women who earn from their craft.

Our artisans are skilled women from the Himalayan foothills who work from home, on their own schedule, supporting their families through their craft. When you buy from Made of Hands, your money goes directly to them. Not to a middleman. Not to a factory floor. To a woman who spent hours making the exact thing you're holding.

The materials are soft, warm, and child-safe.

We use high-quality acrylic wool yarn — chosen specifically because it's warm without being heavy, soft without being itchy, and gentle enough for sensitive skin and young children. Our crochet plushies and amigurumi soft toys use child-safe stuffing and non-toxic materials throughout.

Custom orders are part of what we do.

Want a specific colour? A size that doesn't exist on the website? A bulk order of handmade gifts for a wedding, corporate event, or baby shower? We take custom and bulk orders regularly — just reach out and we'll sort it out together.

No two pieces are ever exactly the same.

Which means whatever you buy from us, you own the only version of it in the world that looks exactly like yours. That's something a machine simply cannot give you.

Every time someone orders from us, I think about my grandmother's orange socks. I think about the woman in Almora who made whatever you're about to receive. I hope when it arrives, you feel what I felt — that someone who cared made this, just for you.
Thank you for being here.
